琉球大学は、太平洋島嶼地域を含めた地域の資源を活用し地域づくりを支える「アジア・太平洋地域の卓越した教育研究拠点」を目指すことをビジョンに掲げています。本取組は、南西諸島海域に位置する本学の地理的特性を活かし、地域および国際連携を軸としたグローカル・ネットワークの構築により、本学に蓄積されたサンゴ礁海洋科学の研究基盤を発展させ，新たな海洋科学研究分野を創出し，国内外で例のない「高度統合型熱帯科学技術イノベーションOkinawa Research Core for Highly Innovative Discipline Science(ORCHIDS) for Marine Science」の拠点を形成することを目的としています。

また、拠点形成により得られる成果を基に、海洋科学のオープンイノベーションシステム体制を構築し、沖縄の海洋科学研究機関をクラスター化した協動体「沖縄海洋科学技術コンソーシアム（仮）」を設立し、次世代研究者の人材育成を担う組織とするとともに、旧来の水産業や環境モニタリングを行う企業・大学・公的研究機関との「共創・協動」の仕組みを構築することで、産学官連携によるイノベーション創出を目標としています。

本取組は、サンゴ礁科学を主とした海洋科学研究分野の統合化を軸に、海洋科学関連産業との連携体制を構築し、革新的な学術新領域の創出に取り組むものです。これは、本学が戦略２として掲げる「地域に根ざした強み・特色ある研究分野の強化及び横断型プロジェクト研究を基軸にした新展開」および「研究資源を持つ学外機関とも連携した研究推進システムを構築する。」に合致するものです。また、本取組を達成することで、第3期中期目標期間中のビジョンである「新しい学術領域であるTropical Marine, Medical, and Island Sciences （TIMES：熱帯島嶼・海洋・医学研究）の国際的な拠点として『アジア・太平洋地域の卓越した教育研究拠点となる大学』」にも寄与するものです。

Director’s Welcome

The University of the Ryukyus aims to be a major research and educational center in the Asia-Pacific Region that activates and supports the natural and human resources of the Pacific Islands region. Our project takes advantage of the geographical location of our university, situated in the Southwest Island region, to establish a global?local network, develop coral reef science, and produce new fields of marine science. Through these trials, we aim to build a base for “Okinawa Research Core for Highly Innovative Discipline Science (ORCHIDS)”. Furthermore, we will establish the Okinawa Marine Science Technology Consortium, which will be organized by the marine science institutes in Okinawa. Additionally, we will nurture the next generation of leaders in the related fields, and aim to generate innovative ideas via industry-academia collaboration.

To foster innovation, this project, based on marine science with a core focus on coral reef science, is in collaboration with the marine science industry. This matches the strategy of our university, namely, “strength of advantages rooted in the region and unique research field and development of interdisciplinary fusion” and “establishment of a research system collaborating with the organization of research resources”. In addition, this project is a step toward achieving our goal of becoming a central university in the Asia-Pacific Region as an international core facility for Tropical Marine, Medical, and Island Science (TIMES).
